The story
A man who knew a lot about God’s law asked Jesus what he must do to live forever with God. Jesus asked him what the law said. Love God with all your heart, the man answered, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus told him he had answered well. Then the man asked one more question: “Who is my neighbor?” So Jesus told him a story.
A man was walking down the lonely, rocky road from Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers took everything he had, hurt him and ran away. He lay beside the road, too weak to get up. A priest came by, saw him and passed by on the other side. Then a Levite, a helper in God’s temple, came near, looked at him, and passed by on the other side too.
Then a Samaritan came along on his donkey. Samaritans and Jews hardly ever spoke to each other, but when he saw the hurt man, his heart was moved with compassion. He knelt down, cleaned the man’s wounds with oil and wine and bandaged them, set him on his own donkey and took him to an inn. The next day he gave the innkeeper two silver coins and promised to pay whatever more it cost. Jesus asked which of the three had been a neighbor. The one who showed mercy, the man said. And Jesus told him, “Go, and do thou in like manner.”
