The story
Mary was going to have a baby very soon, God’s own Son. Then news came from the emperor in Rome: everyone had to go to their family’s hometown to be counted. Joseph belonged to the family of King David, so he had to go to Bethlehem.
Bethlehem was far away, about 90 miles from Nazareth. Mary and Joseph packed what they needed and set off along dusty roads, over hills and past fields. Old paintings show Mary riding a donkey while Joseph walks beside her. Each night they rested, and each morning they walked on, trusting God.
When they finally reached Bethlehem, the town was full of people, and there was no room for them in the inn. So Mary laid her newborn baby, Jesus, in a manger, where the animals ate. The Savior of the world was born in a small, quiet place.
