The Nativity Story

The Nativity is the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Mary laid her newborn son in a manger because there was no room in the inn, angels sang “Glory to God in the highest”, and shepherds hurried to see the baby. Catholics celebrate it at Christmas, on December 25. It’s told in Luke 2:1-20.

In the Bible: Luke 2:1-20

The story

After their long journey, Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem late at night. Every room was full. At last they found a stable, a place for the animals, and there, in the quiet night, Jesus was born. Mary wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, on the soft hay.

In the fields nearby, shepherds were watching their sheep. Suddenly an angel appeared, shining with God’s glory, and told them not to be afraid: a Savior had been born, and they would find him lying in a manger. Then a whole crowd of angels filled the sky, praising God and singing of peace on earth.

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found Mary, Joseph and the baby, just as the angel had said. They told everyone what they had seen, and they went home praising God. And Mary kept all these things in her heart.
