The story

One evening, after a long day of teaching by the lake, Jesus said to his friends, “Let us pass over to the other side.” They climbed into a little wooden boat and set off over the calm water. Jesus was so tired that he lay down at the back of the boat, put his head on a cushion and fell fast asleep.

Then the wind began to blow. Big waves splashed over the sides, the sky turned dark, and the boat began to fill with water. Even the fishermen among the apostles were scared. They hurried to Jesus, woke him, and asked if he didn’t care that they were in trouble. They knew he was the one who could help.

Jesus stood up, calm and unafraid, and spoke to the wind and the sea: “Peace, be still.” At once the wind stopped, and the water grew smooth as a mirror. Jesus asked his friends why they had been so afraid. Full of wonder, they asked one another who he could be, that even the wind and the sea obeyed him. He is the Son of God, who made the wind and the sea.

Questions parents ask

Where did Jesus calm the storm?

On the Sea of Galilee, a big freshwater lake in the north of the Holy Land, where several of the apostles had worked as fishermen. Saint Matthew (8:23-27) and Saint Luke (8:22-25) tell the story too.

Why was Jesus asleep in the storm?

He was tired after a long day of teaching, because Jesus is truly man as well as truly God. When he woke and calmed the sea with a word, the apostles began to see that he is God too.
