The story
David was the youngest son in his family, a shepherd boy who looked after his father’s sheep. He played the harp, sang to God, and protected his flock from lions and bears.
One day David brought food to his brothers in the army of Israel. Across the valley stood Goliath, a giant in heavy armor, shouting at God’s people every day. All the soldiers were afraid. But David said that God, who had kept him safe from the lion and the bear, would keep him safe now too.
David didn’t wear the king’s armor. He took his shepherd’s staff, his sling and five smooth stones from the stream. He told Goliath that he came in the name of the Lord. Then he swung his sling, and one stone hit the giant, who fell to the ground. Everyone saw that the battle belongs to God.
