Jonah and the Whale

Jonah and the whale is the Bible story of a prophet who ran away from what God asked him to do. A big fish swallowed him, and after three days it brought him back to land, where he went to the city of Nineveh after all. The Bible calls it a great fish; many people call it a whale.

In the Bible: Jonah 1-4

The story

God asked Jonah to go to the big city of Nineveh and tell the people to stop doing wrong. But Jonah didn’t want to go. He got on a ship sailing the other way.

Out at sea, a terrible storm shook the ship. Jonah knew it was because he had run away from God, so he told the sailors to throw him into the sea. The storm stopped, and God sent a great fish to swallow Jonah. For three days and three nights, inside the fish, Jonah prayed and said he was sorry.

Then the fish brought Jonah back to dry land. This time Jonah went to Nineveh and gave God’s message. The people listened, said they were sorry and changed their ways, and God forgave them. God loves everyone, and he always gives second chances.
