The story

In the city of Jericho lived a rich man named Zacchaeus. He collected taxes, and he often took more money than he should. People didn’t like him very much.

One day Jesus came to Jericho, and a big crowd filled the street. Zacchaeus wanted to see him, but he was too short to see over everyone. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree.

When Jesus reached the tree, he looked up, called Zacchaeus by name and told him to hurry down, because today he would stay at his house. Zacchaeus hurried down, full of joy. He told Jesus he would give half of what he had to the poor and pay back four times what he had taken. Jesus said he came to seek and to save the lost.
