Palm Sunday for Kids

On Palm Sunday we remember the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a gentle donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks on the road, waved palm branches and sang “Hosanna!” Catholics celebrate it on the Sunday before Easter, the first day of Holy Week. The story is in Matthew 21:1-17.

The story

It was springtime, and crowds were going up to Jerusalem for the great feast of the Passover. Near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead to a little village. There they would find a donkey tied up, with her young colt beside her, and if anyone asked, they were to say that the Lord needed them. Everything was just as Jesus had said.

The disciples laid their cloaks on the colt, and Jesus sat on it. Long before, a prophet had said that Jerusalem’s king would come meek and gentle, riding on a donkey, not on a big war horse. As Jesus rode down the hill, a great crowd spread their cloaks on the road, like a carpet for a king. Others cut branches from the trees, and Saint John tells us they were palms.

Everyone sang and shouted, “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.” The whole city asked who he was, and the crowds answered that he was Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth. In the temple even the children sang Hosanna, and Jesus was glad to hear them. That day began Holy Week, the most special week of the year, which leads to Easter.

Questions parents ask

What is Palm Sunday?

It’s the Sunday before Easter, and it begins Holy Week. At Mass the priest blesses palm branches, and we often walk in a procession holding them, welcoming Jesus as the people of Jerusalem did. Later in the same Mass we hear the story of Jesus’ Passion, so the day goes from the joy of the palms to the cross, on the way to Easter.

What do we do with the blessed palms?

Many families take them home and keep them near a crucifix or a holy picture, and some weave them into little crosses. Because they are blessed, old palms aren’t thrown away: many parishes collect them before Lent and burn them to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday.

What does Hosanna mean?

Hosanna is a Hebrew word that first meant “save us, please”. By Jesus’ time it had become a joyful shout of praise. We still sing it at every Mass, in the Holy, Holy, Holy.
