The story
Jacob had twelve sons, and he loved young Joseph in a special way, because Joseph was born when Jacob was already old. He gave Joseph a beautiful coat of many colors. Joseph had dreams, too: in one, his brothers’ bundles of wheat bowed down to his; in another, the sun, the moon and eleven stars bowed down to him. His big brothers grew jealous.
One day Joseph went to find his brothers, who were out with the sheep. When they saw him coming in his bright coat, their hearts grew hard. They took his coat, put him down in a dry, empty well, and sold him to traders on their way to Egypt. Far from home, Joseph worked hard and stayed honest, and even in prison for something he hadn’t done, he kept trusting God.
When Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, dreamed of seven fat cows and seven thin ones, Joseph said God would give the answer: seven good years were coming, then seven hungry years. Pharaoh put him in charge of all Egypt, and Joseph filled the storehouses with grain. When the hungry years came, his brothers came to buy food and bowed before him, just as in his dream. Joseph could have been angry. Instead he cried, told them “I am Joseph,” and forgave them, and the whole family was together again.
