Prayer for kids

The Guardian Angel prayer

The Guardian Angel prayer asks the angel God gives each of us to stay beside us, light our way and keep us safe. It’s a favorite bedtime prayer for children because it’s short, it rhymes, and it reminds them they are never alone in the dark.

Angel of God

Pray together

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

A traditional Catholic prayer. Jesus said that children’s angels “always see the face of my Father” (Matthew 18:10).

How to pray it with your child

  1. 1

    Make it the last prayer

Say it after the lights go out. It’s the right moment for a prayer about not being alone.

  2. 2

    Learn it in rhyming pairs

Say one line and let your child say the rhyme that answers it. The rhymes do most of the remembering.

  3. 3

    Talk about what angels do

Angels are God’s messengers and helpers. Ask your child where they’d like their angel to help them tomorrow.

When is the feast of the Guardian Angels?

October 2. The archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael have their own feast on September 29.
