Prayer for kids

The Our Father (the Lord’s Prayer)

The Our Father, also called the Lord’s Prayer, is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples when they asked him how to pray. It’s in the Gospels of Matthew (6:9-13) and Luke (11:2-4), and Catholics pray it at every Mass and at the start of each decade of the Rosary.

Our Father

You say

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Your child answers

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4.

How to pray it with your child

  1. 1

    Split it in two

You pray up to “on earth as it is in heaven”; your child answers from “Give us this day”. It’s the way it’s prayed in the Rosary.

  2. 2

    Picture a loving father

Jesus invites us to call God “Father”. Ask your child what a good dad does, then say: God loves you even more than that.

  3. 3

    Stop at “daily bread”

Once a week, pause there and name one thing God gave you today. It turns the words into a thank-you.

Questions parents ask

Where is the Our Father in the Bible?

In Matthew 6:9-13, in the Sermon on the Mount, and in a shorter form in Luke 11:2-4, where the disciples ask, “Lord, teach us to pray.”

Why don’t Catholics end with “For thine is the kingdom”?

Those words are an ancient prayer of praise, not part of the Our Father in the oldest Gospel manuscripts. Catholics say them at Mass, a moment after the Our Father, and end the prayer itself with “Amen.”
