Who was Saint Nicholas?

An old story says that when Nicholas was young, his parents died and left him a lot of money. He decided to use it to help people, quietly, so that only God would know.

In his town lived a poor father with three daughters. One night Nicholas crept to their house and tossed a little bag of gold through the window. Then he did it again, and again. When the father finally saw who it was, Nicholas asked him to keep it a secret.

Nicholas became the bishop of Myra and cared for his people all his life. Centuries later, Dutch families called him Sinterklaas, and that name became Santa Claus. Today, on December 6, many children find small gifts in their shoes, just as he gave his.
