Who is Our Lady of Fatima?
Lucia, who was ten, and her cousins Francisco, nine, and Jacinta, seven, looked after their families’ sheep in the hills near Fatima. They loved to play, Francisco played a little flute, and sometimes they hurried through the Rosary to get back to their games.
On May 13, 1917, a lady brighter than the sun appeared to them above a small oak tree. She came back each month until October and asked them to pray the Rosary every day for peace in the world. In October she told them, “I am the Lady of the Rosary,” and a great crowd saw the sun dance in the sky.
From then on the children prayed with all their hearts and gave their lunches to poor children. Francisco loved to keep Jesus company in the church, and Jacinta prayed for the Pope. They both died young, and Pope Francis declared them saints in 2017. Lucia became a nun and lived until 2005.
When is Our Lady of Fatima’s feast day?
Our Lady of Fatima’s feast day is May 13. It remembers the first time she appeared to the three children, on May 13, 1917. Francisco and Jacinta have their own feast, February 20.
