Who was Saint Peter?
His name was Simon, and he fished with his brother Andrew on the Sea of Galilee. One morning, after a whole night of catching nothing, Jesus told him to let down his nets again, and they filled with so many fish that they began to break. Jesus told him that from then on he would bring people to God, and Simon left his boat to follow him.
Jesus gave him a new name, Peter, which means rock, and said he would build his Church on him. Peter loved Jesus very much, but he wasn’t perfect. Once he walked on the water toward Jesus and began to sink when he got scared. And on the night Jesus was arrested, Peter said three times that he didn’t know him. Then he cried, because he was sorry.
After Jesus rose from the dead, he met Peter by the lake and asked him three times, “Do you love me?” Three times Peter said yes, and Jesus asked him to take care of his sheep, his people. Peter led the Church, traveled far to tell people about Jesus and, in Rome, gave his life for him.
When is Saint Peter’s feast day?
Saint Peter’s feast day is June 29. He shares it with Saint Paul: it’s the feast of the two great apostles of Rome.
