Who is Saint Michael the Archangel?
Angels are spirits God made to praise him and to carry his messages. They don’t have bodies like ours, but they are real, and they help us. A few of them are named in the Bible: Gabriel, who came to Mary; Raphael, who traveled with young Tobias; and Michael.
The prophet Daniel calls Michael a great prince who stands guard over God’s people. In the Book of Revelation, there is a battle in heaven, and Michael and his angels drive out the dragon, the devil, who wanted to be like God.
That’s what his name means: “Who is like God?” Nobody is! Christians have asked Saint Michael for protection for centuries, and built churches for him in high places, like the abbey on the island of Mont-Saint-Michel in France.
When is Saint Michael the Archangel’s feast day?
Saint Michael the Archangel’s feast day is September 29. He shares it with the archangels Gabriel and Raphael: it’s the feast of the three archangels.
