The Memorare prayer

The Memorare is a prayer asking Mary for help, trusting that no one who ever turned to her was left alone. Its name is its first word in Latin, “Remember”. It is often linked with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, and Father Claude Bernard spread it widely in the 1600s.

Memorare

Pray together

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

How to pray it with your child

  1. 1

    Pray it for someone

Before you begin, name one person who needs help: a sick grandparent, a friend at school.

  2. 2

    You read, they listen

It’s a long prayer for little ones. Let them hold your hand and join in on the last line.

  3. 3

    Explain the first word

“Remember” is us reminding Mary, like a child tugging a mother’s sleeve: you always help, so please help us now.

Questions parents ask

Who wrote the Memorare?

No one knows for sure. It grew from a longer medieval prayer and is often credited to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1100s); Father Claude Bernard, a French priest of the 1600s, made it popular.

When should we pray it?

Any time you need help. Many families pray it when someone is sick, before a hard day, or at the end of the Rosary.
